Pure gold is 24 Karat. It is much too soft to hold its shape though and is therefore mixed / alloyed with other metals for jewelry making / wearing purposes. Karats refer to the alloy’s purity. For example: 18 karat gold is 18/24, which is ¾th pure or 75 percent pure.
